{"id":165349,"date":"2025-07-10T07:23:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-10T05:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/?p=165349"},"modified":"2025-07-04T12:17:42","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T10:17:42","slug":"commission-to-kill-eu-anti-greenwashing-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/commission-to-kill-eu-anti-greenwashing-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"Commission to kill EU anti-greenwashing rules"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p>The European Commission will scrap its proposed law to fight corporate greenwashing following a request from conservative lawmakers to kill the file.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"658\" height=\"342\" src=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2025\/07\/Bildschirmfoto-2025-07-04-um-11.21.08.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-165365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2025\/07\/Bildschirmfoto-2025-07-04-um-11.21.08.png 658w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2025\/07\/Bildschirmfoto-2025-07-04-um-11.21.08-300x156.png 300w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2025\/07\/Bildschirmfoto-2025-07-04-um-11.21.08-150x78.png 150w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2025\/07\/Bildschirmfoto-2025-07-04-um-11.21.08-400x208.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 658px) 100vw, 658px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The decision means the EU will not be asking companies to provide verified inform<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the current context, indeed the Commission intends to withdraw the Green claims proposal,\u201d Maciej Berestecki, a spokesperson for the Commission, told the press on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The news immediately sparked confusion among EU officials and lawmakers, who said the Commission had not confirmed if it would continue negotiations with the European Parliament and EU countries on the legislation \u2014 known in Brussels as trilogues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/bills\/650637\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Green Claims Directive<\/a>&nbsp;was proposed in March 2023 and aims to stop companies from misleading consumers with unfounded claims that their products and services are good for the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/200427\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">POLITICO reported<\/a>&nbsp;that the center-right European People\u2019s Party (EPP) had sent a letter to the environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall, asking the EU executive to withdraw its proposal, threatening not to support any deal coming out of the negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a follow-up written statement published Friday afternoon, the Commission reiterated that its \u201cintention [is] to withdraw the Green Claims legislative proposal\u201d citing that ongoing talks with EU countries and MEPs&nbsp; \u201cgo against the Commission\u2019s simplification agenda\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That didn\u2019t satisfy the co-legislators. \u201cUntil there is a clear decision from the Commission, the Presidency is ready to enter constructively into the trilogue and go ahead as planned,\u201d said the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU, currently leading the negotiations on behalf of EU countries. The next round of talks is scheduled for Monday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lawmakers in the European Parliament also said the negotiations could still take place. \u201cLet us be very clear: the EU Parliament has not requested to stop negotiations,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sandrogozi\/status\/1936051988363346078?s=48&amp;t=qUmIdn11o9JFcMp_6AR_4Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Sandro Gozi, an MEP from the centrist Renew group, who co-leads the negotiations on behalf of the European Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His statement came in response to celebratory claims from the center-right European People\u2019s Party (EPP), after the group\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/200427\" target=\"_blank\">formally requested<\/a>\u00a0a withdrawal to the environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I welcome the fact that the Commission has listened to the EPP concerns and hope this opens the door to a more balanced and effective approach,\u201d said Danu\u0161e Nerudov\u00e1, one of the two lawmakers from the EPP leading the group\u2019s work on the file. The proposal is \u201coverly complex,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Gozi said the decision on whether to continue with these negotiations or not \u201clies with the rapporteurs, not with the groups.\u201d Rapporteurs are lawmakers charged with leading the Parliament\u2019s work on particular legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Too burdensome&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Green Claims Directive is complementary to an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/bills\/636355\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">older directive<\/a>&nbsp;which protects consumers from greenwashing by preventing companies from making general claims like \u201ceco-friendly\u201d or \u201cpro-planet\u201d on their products.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is meant to instruct companies on what verified information to provide to back up the more explicit green claims they make, on the use of recycled materials in their products, for example.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the Commission argues that the file now risks creating more administrative burden for companies, especially smaller businesses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the Commission\u2019s original proposal exempted micro-enterprises from the scope of the rules, the executive says that \u201ccurrent discussions\u201d reflect the possibility that 30 million micro-enterprises could end up having to comply.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur objective has been to find an agreement on a legislative proposal that would reduce administrative burden and complexity for companies, and in particular smaller companies,\u201d the Commission\u2019s statement reads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy siding with the far right to block the Green Claims Directive, the EPP Group undermines every company that invested in the green transition in good faith,\u201d said Virginijus Sinkevi\u010dius, MEP from the Greens group and the former environment commissioner,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/VSinkevicius\/status\/1936044688315650479?t=wBdeHM56srMUobaiKozBjg&amp;s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in a social media post<\/a>.
