Our newest material grade is a great example\u00a0of what happens when you follow that principle from development to final product: improved performance, broader applications, and – as a bonus – a whole new look.\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0excited to launch our new injection moulding\u00a0grade: developed for greater scalability and technical performance, now available in a colour\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0a first in the traceless\u00ae portfolio – naturally black.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We sat down with Philipp, Application Engineer at traceless and lead on the development, and Michael, Sales Manager\u00a0for this product line, to talk about how it came to life – and what it means for our customers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s\u00a0start at the beginning – what was the goal behind this new grade?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Philipp:<\/strong>\u00a0”We wanted to develop a material grade that performs even better in injection moulding\u00a0processes – especially for rigid applications like single-use cutlery. So\u00a0we adjusted the formulation to improve things like processability, mechanical stability, and scalability for converters.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result of this new composition – still 100% plant-based – the material turned almost black. It\u2019s\u00a0a result of\u00a0the natural colour\u00a0of the plant residues\u00a0and specific formulation we used. This significant color makes the new grade\u00a0stand out clearly from our existing portfolio\u00a0– but it\u2019s\u00a0completely in line with how we develop: using what nature gives us.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just like all traceless materials, the new grade follows our strict sustainability principles: As natural polymer material, it is 100% biobased using plant residues, and free of fossils, synthetic polymers and potentially problematic additives like so-called forever chemicals. And of course, it is naturally compostable.”   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So\u00a0the black tone came from the material itself?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Philipp:\u00a0<\/strong>”Exactly. It\u2019s\u00a0the natural result of the new formulation, based on natural plant residues and other plant-based ingredients. There are no synthetic pigments involved. The colour\u00a0is simply just an outcome of how we\u2019re\u00a0using the power of plants to create new material solutions.”\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what improvements does the new grade offer in practice?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Philipp:\u00a0<\/strong>”We made targeted improvements to the formulation to optimize\u00a0it for injection moulding\u00a0– and the results speak for themselves. The material now runs even more reliably on standard machinery, shows increased mechanical strength, and delivers greater output consistency. These are important gains that help reduce variability in production and make the material even more consistent across different processing setups. It\u2019s\u00a0an important step\u00a0forward on our journey to full commercialization, and a solid foundation for scaling the material across more applications in an industrial\u00a0setting – hereby maximizing our environmental impact.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

From a market perspective – why does this matter for customers?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Michael:\u00a0<\/strong>”What makes this grade so relevant is how those improvements show up in practice for our partners.\u00a0It runs smoothly on existing machinery making it easy for partners to integrate without major process changes. It\u2019s\u00a0stronger and more reliable, with improved performance that makes it suitable for a wider range of rigid applications.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The black colour? It wasn\u2019t\u00a0the goal – but it\u2019s\u00a0actually a\u00a0clear advantage. It gives the material a premium, high-quality look that closer\u00a0resembles conventional plastic, making it easier for customers to adopt\u00a0without rethinking their product designs.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this new grade, we\u2019re\u00a0offering a solution that meets market expectations on every level – from performance to sustainability to visual appeal.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And just to confirm – the core sustainability features are still there?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Philipp:\u00a0<\/strong>”Absolutely!\u00a0Also with the new formulation, the material stays true to our core sustainability standards.\u00a0It is 100% plastic-free and based on natural polymers which are not chemically modified. Besides that it is naturally home-compostable, fully bio-based, and made from plant-based residues – not food crops.\u00a0Its carbon footprint is maximally optimized, and it contains\u00a0no harmful chemicals, making it safe for both people and planet.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At traceless, maintaining\u00a0these standards always comes first in our development work. We continuously explore what\u2019s\u00a0technically possible – but always within the boundaries of our sustainability principles.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0”And of course\u00a0also from a regulatory perspective, this new material grade maintains\u00a0its advantages – still outside the scope of the SUPD and not impacted\u00a0by upcoming PPWR rules. It\u2019s\u00a0a future-ready material grade for businesses that want to scale sustainability, while staying compliant to regulations.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So\u00a0does this mean all traceless materials are black now?<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Philipp:<\/strong>\u00a0”No, this new grade is specifically developed for injection moulding\u00a0– so it\u2019s\u00a0intended\u00a0for rigid\u00a0applications. Our other grades, like those used for paper coatings and films, still have their familiar appearance. The granules are naturally amber, and the final films or coatings range in colour\u00a0from yellow to nearly transparent,\u00a0depending on thickness and processing.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again, that colour\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0added – it\u2019s\u00a0the natural result of the plant residues we use as a base. So rather than a shift, the black tone simply extends our colour\u00a0palette.”<\/p>\n\n\n
