Globally,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenintelligence.org.uk\/news-and-resources\/news\/global-workforce-lacks-green-skills-report-reveals-critical-shortages-and-gender-disparities\/\">only one in eight workers have at least one green skill<\/a>\u00a0necessary for businesses to deliver on their sustainability ambitions.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iberdrola.com\/press-room\/news\/detail\/business-leaders-are-overwhelmingly-positive-about-the-green-transition-but-more-needs-to-be-done-to-implement-green-skills-programmes\">Research has found<\/a>\u00a0that while green skills are deemed essential by 79% of business leaders, only 55% of companies have programmes in place to develop them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond technical green skills, there is another obstacle to climate action progress. Many people are not yet equipped with transversal, \u2018soft\u2019 skills \u2013 such as communication, leadership, change management and systems-thinking abilities \u2013 which are needed to effectively drive change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is clear we are currently not moving fast enough to equip people with the full range of skills required to build a just future, where humanity thrives within planetary boundaries. With 15 years\u2019 experience on the ground at Climate KIC, we know that for climate solutions to thrive, people must be able to collaborate across sectors \u2013 and by having a space to navigate&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate-kic.org\/opinion\/uncomfortable-but-necessary-a-new-approach-to-development-funding\/\">entrenched power dynamics<\/a>&nbsp;to prioritise local leadership and innovation, action can be inspired across all levels of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Equipping future climate leaders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Climate KIC Academy bridges the green skills gap by integrating technical knowledge with transversal skills. It accelerates the green transition by empowering climate leaders to turn knowledge into action and equipping businesses, industries, and policymakers with essential skills for lasting change.&nbsp;Its curriculum blends technical and transversal skills, preparing leaders to innovate and navigate complex environmental and societal challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe need to be innovative and flexible in responding to the climate challenge, which is why the Climate KIC Academy programme is fully customisable. It builds on 15 years\u2019 experience accumulated from delivering similar programmes and we have created adaptable modules that can be tailored towards stakeholders\u2019 challenges,\u201d says <strong>Solveig Zophoniasdottir, Learning Director at Climate KIC<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>A fully customised offering, the Climate KIC Academy is based on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate-kic.org\/programmes\/learning-by-doing\/\">Climate KIC systems thinking approach<\/a>&nbsp;and sensemaking principles. Located in Western Ukraine, Rivne wants to dramatically reduce its carbon emissions and become the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate-kic.org\/news\/rivne-sustainability\/\">first Ukrainian city to achieve climate neutrality by 2030<\/a>, reflecting the city\u2019s determination to take ambitious action on climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Rivne\u2019s Deputy Mayor Artem Hanushchak<\/strong> highlighted the pilot\u2019s impact: \u201cParticipating in the Climate KIC Academy was a valuable opportunity to rethink governance and build a long-term climate strategy through collaboration. Analysing environmental issues and integrating practical tools acquired during the training provides a foundation for developing a long-term climate neutrality strategy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme, tailored to Rivne\u2019s needs, emphasised resilience, renewable energy adoption and the integration of European sustainability practices. It brought together key partners, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufu.global\/\">United for Ukraine (UFU)<\/a>, which provided essential local insights and stakeholder connections.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Olga Hammam, CEO of UFU<\/strong>, explains:\u00a0 \u201cAfter Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion, UFU became the biggest platform supporting and connecting displaced individuals from Ukraine. In this pilot, we helped Climate KIC identify suitable local partners, bring stakeholders together and advise on the communications sensitivities of the local context \u2013 \u201cemergency\u201d means something specific for Ukrainians.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative focused on Ukraine\u2019s green recovery and transition \u2013 as well as the country\u2019s path towards EU accession. The pilot engaged 25 Ukrainian professionals through workshops, systems innovation training and leadership huddles, where participants worked together on local climate challenges such as the energy transition or raising climate awareness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the pilot\u2019s key themes was sustainability as a form of resilience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Oksana Udovyk, a researcher at Spanish institute INGENIO<\/strong>, led discussions on how green recovery can strengthen Ukraine\u2019s independence: \u201cReducing reliance on generators by expanding renewable energy is a critical way to enhance resilience during wartime.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion, sustainability wasn\u2019t a mainstream topic in Ukraine \u2013 however, it has become increasingly prominent. \u201cDue to EU accession and financing being seen through the lens of \u2018sustainable investment\u2019, attitudes are shifting,\u201d says <strong>Olga Hammam.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Course feedback showed that participants enjoyed the programme and found it useful, with all stating it met or exceeded expectations and that they would recommend it to a friend or colleague. Participants rated the overall content provided by the programme especially highly \u2013 71% were very satisfied with the pilot\u2019s structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Looking for future Climate KIC Academy partners<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the success of the Rivne pilot, we are keen to roll out more Climate KIC Academy programmes in Europe \u2013 and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The green transition needs people who can think, connect and lead differently and the Climate KIC Academy is here to prepare us. We\u2019re seeking partners, funders, and participants to help scale this initiative:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Industry leaders, policymakers and educators to collaborate with us on curriculum development, help us co-develop programmes and deliver them to participants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Funders and investors to help us expand our offerings and reach new communities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participants such as professionals from any sector or industry \u2013 looking to upskill or reskill, who also understand the importance of gaining transversal skills to help scale up climate solutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThere are a lot of unique climate solutions which have been developed by companies, municipalities and NGOs \u2013 programmes like the Climate KIC Academy help these communities connect and share knowledge, which countries outside Ukraine can also learn from,\u201d says <strong>Maksym Karpash, Vice Rector for International Affairs and Strategic Development at King Danylo University<\/strong>, who led a workshop at the Climate KIC Academy pilot.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you want to help us develop green skills across Europe?
