In the US alone, the EPA estimates that 233 million are scrapped every year.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>45 percent are consumed as fuel through recycling, 20 percent go into civil engineering projects, or are otherwise recycled. 8 percent are recycled as ground rubber into asphalt or other products; 3 percent are used in other recycling applications, and 9 percent are exported.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving 20 percent for tire cemeteries \u2013 also known as landfill, in many cases.
