The project had been at an advanced stage of development with final construction plans completed and the environmental permitting process underway, the German plastics industry think tank BKV reported. The plant was to have had the capacity to process 500,000 tpy of plastic waste. The report cited the availability of cheap virgin plastic from China among the factors which undermined the project&#8217;s business model and contributed to the decision to abandon plans for the recycling facility.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In May 2023, the Port of Ostende had said that construction work was slated to begin in Ostende at the end of 2024, with commissioning scheduled for 2026. At that time, Appi had signed a long-term leasing agreement for a 15-hectare piece of land in the Plassendale area of the port, which is home to its &#8220;Circular Cluster&#8221;. The project was supposed to create around 110 jobs. However, BKV reported that Appi had ceased operations back at the end of November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belgian media reports indicated that the Port of Ostenende had already signed a contract with another company from the same sector after the failure of the Appi project.
