The progress towards the 2025 commitments is detailed in the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/global-commitment-2024\/overview\"><u>2024 Progress Report<\/u><\/a>\u00a0by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/\"><u>Ellen MacArthur Foundation<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/\"><u>UN Environment Programme<\/u><\/a>\u00a0(UNEP). UPM Raflatac joined the Global Commitment as the first label materials company in October 2018.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAs a global partner for sustainable material solutions, the Global Commitment is an important framework for us to transparently showcase our actions in tackling plastic waste and pollution. Through developing our product and service offer, our pledge is to help companies and brand-owners increase the circularity of their packaging,\u201d says\u00a0<strong>Robert Taylor<\/strong>, Sustainability Director, <strong>UPM Raflatac.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>As highlighted in the report, UPM Raflatac continued its work towards UPM\u2019s 2030 responsibility targets and a future beyond fossils. The company has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upmraflatac.com\/siteassets\/documents\/sustainability\/upm_raflatac_climate_review_2023.pdf\"><u>reduced the scope 1 and 2 emission intensity of its factories by 36% by 2023<\/u><\/a>, compared to a 2015 baseline year. Four of UPM Raflatac\u2019s factories were landfill-free in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>UPM Raflatac offers label solutions that promote recyclability and circularity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In April 2023,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upmraflatac.com\/news-and-stories\/news\/2023\/04\/upm-raflatac-introduces-new-paper-label-solutions-enhancing-pet-and-hdpe-recycling\/\"><u>UPM Raflatac introduced the PureCycle paper label materials<\/u><\/a>, which are part of UPM Raflatac\u2019s SmartCircle\u2122 portfolio. The PureCycle label materials received European certifications of recyclability from Institut cyclos-HTP&nbsp;for PET and HDPE packaging, verifying their recyclability in the most common recycling processes. This wash-off label innovation separates cleanly from the recycled packaging, resulting in a high-quality recyclate which can then be converted into new materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, UPM Raflatac also gained further recognition for its Ocean Action label, which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upmraflatac.com\/news-and-stories\/news\/2023\/09\/upm-raflatacs-ocean-action-label-wins-sustainability-award-at-the-label-industry-global-awards-2023\/\"><u>won the Sustainability Award at the Label Industry Global Awards 2023<\/u><\/a>. The ISCC PLUS certified Ocean Action label is made with ocean-bound plastic through a mass balance approach and is the first of its kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>UPM Raflatac continued to develop its sustainability services<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During 2023, UPM Raflatac continued to grow the impact of its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upmraflatac.com\/products-and-services\/services\/rafcycle-recycling-services\/\"><u>RafCycle\u2122<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;recycling service. In November 2023, the company&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upmraflatac.com\/news-and-stories\/news\/2023\/11\/upm-raflatac-partners-with-soprema-to-promote-label-waste-recycling-with-the-rafcycle-service\/\"><u>launched a partnership with Soprema<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;to promote the recycling of label release liner waste by transforming it into new construction and insulation materials. In the Americas region, investments into organizational capabilities enabled the relaunching of the RafCycle program in mid-2023. All in all, the number of RafCycle participants grew by 10% to 440 between 2022 and 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upmraflatac.com\/news-and-stories\/news\/2023\/08\/label-life-by-upm-raflatac-sets-new-industry-standards-with-dekra-verified-lca-calculations\/\"><u>UPM Raflatac received a certificate of validity<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;from leading international assurance service provider, DEKRA, for its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upmraflatac.com\/products-and-services\/services\/label-life-service\/\"><u>Label Life service<\/u><\/a>. Label Life provides essential environmental information on label materials, utilizing the standardized method of life cycle assessment (LCA). The external certificate by DEKRA provides UPM Raflatac\u2019s customers increased assurance in communicating about the environmental impact of their labels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe Global Commitment has driven substantial progress in tackling the plastic waste crisis. However, as outlined in the 2024 Progress Report, the world at large is off track, and plastic pollution continues to grow.
