{"id":15032,"date":"2011-01-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-01-25T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bio-based.eu\/news\/index.php?startid=20110126-03n"},"modified":"2011-01-26T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2011-01-25T22:00:00","slug":"making-the-most-of-renewably-sourced-polymers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/making-the-most-of-renewably-sourced-polymers\/","title":{"rendered":"Making the Most of Renewably Sourced Polymers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><img SRC=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/news-images\/20110126-03\/gI_119094_CarolCasarino_200x200.jpg\" align=\"right\" style=\"margin-left:10px;\" BORDER=\"0\" ALT=\"Bild\"\/>The many ways bio-based materials can enhance performance and meet consumer demand for environmentally responsible products are explored in a talk by Carol Casarino, Ph.D., global technology manager, DuPont Packaging &#038; Industrial Polymers, at the inaugural Bioplastics &#8220;Reshaping of an Industry&#8221; Conference, Feb. 1-3 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nev.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As consumers demand more renewably sourced durable and disposable products, the number of materials available to manufacturers is growing rapidly \u2013 it\u2019s hard to keep up,\u201d said Casarino. &#8220;With the market poised for double-digit growth over the next few years, opportunities to network and share information are important to developing new products that meet consumer demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Casarino will present &#8220;Perspectives on Partially Bio-Based Materials&#8221;, which focuses on bio-content sources, coupling agents and compatabilizers, on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at 2:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>DuPont led the industry with the first families of high-performance renewably sourced materials to help reduce dependence on fossil fuels. These materials include: DuPont\u2122 Biomax\u00ae resins and modifiers for the packaging industry; DuPont\u2122 Sorona\u00ae polymer for fabrics and fibers; and DuPont\u2122 Hytrel\u00ae RS thermoplastics polyester elastomer, Zytel\u00ae RS nylon and Sorona\u00ae EP thermoplastic polymer for automotive and other consumer industries.<\/p>\n<p><b>Giving Shape to Smarter Ideas<\/b><br \/>This broad portfolio is used in many products across multiple industries. At the conference, DuPont will show a Calvin Klein Golf jacket made with 100 percent Sorona\u00ae &#8220;shape memory&#8221; fabric, Toyota PRIUS floor mats made with Sorona\u00ae polymer, the award-winning Denso\/Toyota radiator end-tank and Fisher wall plugs using Zytel\u00ae RS nylon.<\/p>\n<p><b>Concepts include:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High-gloss cosmetic cases of Biomax\u00ae PTT resin that offer great chemical and scratch resistance and in some cases eliminate the need for additional coating.<\/li>\n<li>Samples that show how Biomax\u00ae Strong PLA Toughening Modifier for bio-based and compostable polylactic acid (PLA) packaging can improve toughness and reduce brittleness \u2014 without sacrificing product clarity.<\/li>\n<li>Automotive air bag door covers from Hytrel\u00ae RS.<\/li>\n<li>An automotive headlamp bezel using Sorona\u00ae EP.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;The opportunity to touch, feel, explore and talk about these new materials stimulates new ideas for durable and disposable products that not only reduce environmental impact, but improve the product\u2019s performance,\u201d said Casarino. &#8220;Performance improvement is an important distinction for renewable materials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DuPont \u2013 one of the first companies to publicly establish environmental goals 20 years ago \u2013 has broadened its sustainability commitments beyond internal footprint reduction to include market-driven targets for both revenue and research and development investment.
