The basis for the research was provided by the doctoral thesis of VTT\u2019s Principal Scientist&nbsp;Anna Kalliola, in which she examined the use of molecular oxygen to valorise technical lignins for material applications.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANDRITZ Pulp &amp; Paper provides sustainable technology, automation, and service solutions for the production of all types of pulp and paper. The technologies and services focus on increased production efficiency, lower overall operating costs as well as innovative decarbonisation strategies and autonomous plant operation. Mets\u00e4 Fibre, as a part of Mets\u00e4 Group, is a leading producer of high quality northern wood based bioproducts such as pulp, sawn timber, biochemicals, and bioenergy. Leading material science company Dow serves customers in markets such as infrastructure, packaging, mobility and consumer applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Commitment throughout the value chain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the level of atmospheric carbon is higher than ever before, causing the global temperature to rise in parallel. New alternatives with low global warming potential help to slow down the detrimental consequences of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vttresearch.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/4_3_max_320\/public\/2024-08\/9bccb30a-a0e0-47cd-9d57-5bd24f8260c4_0.jpg.webp?itok=YvtvyGEe\" alt=\"LigniOx solution and sand, cement and water\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Black liquor from lignin \u00a9 VTT<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Lignin is a side stream of pulp production separated from the wood fibres into black liquor and currently mainly burned as bioenergy. However, it has potential as a versatile raw material for various chemical and material applications, and the industry is searching for ways to utilise it more efficiently in high-value products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the successful jointly funded EU-LigniOx project, VTT, Mets\u00e4 Fibre and ANDRITZ have collaborated intensively on the process for the past two years, says VTT\u2019s Kalliola:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe have further studied and developed the LigniOx process \u2013 which involves oxidising the lignin and processing it with membrane technology. The tests have been carried out at our Bioruukki pilot centre in Espoo and at the separation technology unit in Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4. ANDRITZ will be the technology provider for the demo plant. Expected to start up in late 2025, the plant\u2019s daily capacity will be two tonnes of the new lignin product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe EU-LigniOx project is an excellent example of how R&amp;D projects can bring together companies in the value chain and initiate further collaboration in advancing \u2013 in this case \u2013 totally new technology and products. VTT has the expertise and research facilities that can support us in our lignin activities,\u201d says&nbsp;<strong>Anna Suurn\u00e4kki<\/strong>, VP Research at <strong>Mets\u00e4 Fibre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Mets\u00e4 Group and ANDRITZ will focus on developing the production process of the new lignin product and its integration into the bioproduct mill, as well as making the product properties suitable for various end uses. Based on the lignin product, Dow will develop high-performance bio-plasticisers for concrete and gypsum applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cVTT was an excellent research partner, bringing pragmatic and innovative solutions to advance breakthrough technology towards commercialisation.&nbsp;We are very pleased with the progress and relationship,\u201d comments&nbsp;<strong>Anna Davis<\/strong>, <strong>R&amp;D\/TS&amp;D Director, Dow Construction Chemicals<\/strong> R&amp;D, on the successful cooperation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Global commercial potential for lignin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>VTT\u2019s offering in the LigniOx project has included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Research and innovation behind the LigniOx process and oxidised lignin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Testing and piloting at VTT\u2019s facilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deep know-how in lignin analytics and membrane filtration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support in upscaling from pilot level to demo plant scale.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>VTT has patents related to the use of oxidised lignin and has patented the integration of the LigniOx process into a kraft pulp mill together with ANDRITZ and Mets\u00e4 Fibre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ANDRITZ is pleased to add LigniOx to their business portfolio and sees great potential in offering the process to biorefineries worldwide, working together with VTT in supporting the industrialisation of the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cBy combining our experience, technology and top expertise, we\u2019re able to develop new products for our customers and the market.
