They can also be made from sustainable organic materials. Airbus has created an experimental helicopter panel using \u2018bio-derived\u2019 fibres, whose production process starts with capturing atmospheric carbon dioxide.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Airbus is committed to leading aerospace\u2019s decarbonisation. While this clearly implies reducing the CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;emissions of its products over their life cycle (Scope 3), any contribution helps, including cutting carbon from production.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that spirit, Airbus specialists are examining alternatives to fossil fuel-derived carbon fibres &#8211; also known as carbon composites &#8211; that are used to build structural aircraft components, such as fuselage shells or wings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their aim is to develop and eventually industrialise a bio-based carbon fibre with the equivalent performance and safety of regular composites. This can be achieved by adopting \u2018power to X\u2019 technology where \u2018X\u2019 represents the resulting product, such as gas, heat or fuel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hold on: this is where things get technical!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a nutshell, in this instance \u2018power to X\u2019 converts renewable energy into chemical products including synthetic hydrocarbons. These can then be used to produce bio-fibres. The process requires renewable carbon, which can either originate from non-fossil sources such as biomass, or from capturing CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;directly from the atmosphere.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At demonstrator level, Airbus\u2019 researchers have shown that it is possible to harness \u2018power to X\u2019 to produce bio-fibres from a chemical component (acrylonitrile) derived from atmospheric carbon dioxide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.airbus.com\/sites\/g\/files\/jlcbta136\/files\/styles\/airbus_608x608\/public\/2024-06\/doph-1280-038.jpg?itok=DIX2Y-Q6\" alt=\"The bio-based panel on the PioneerLab\" title=\"The bio-based panel on the PioneerLab\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 Airbus<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Now flying: Non-fossil-derived parts&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers have used an acrylonitrile-derived biofibre to manufacture a proof-of-concept nose panel for Airbus Helicopters\u2019&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbus.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2023-09-airbus-unveils-pioneerlab-as-its-new-twin-engine-flying-laboratory\">H145 PioneerLab<\/a>. The panel was flight-tested in May 2024 to demonstrate the alternative fibre\u2019s airworthiness. As stiff and strong as the conventional part, the panel is small enough to produce quickly and cost-effectively. Furthermore it is non-structural, and therefore a safe part of the aircraft on which to test the material.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acrylonitrile is an intermediate product usually made from crude oil, but the Airbus team used a chemically identical, sustainable alternative to produce the fibres with the same performance level. Acrylonitrile is derived from sustainable ISCC*-certified non-fossil feedstocks (wood and food waste, recycled cooking oils, algae\u2026), plus renewable sources of ammonia and propylene.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*International Sustainability &amp; Carbon Certification&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Incentives to switch to lower-carbon materials<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Full life cycle analysis undertaken by Airbus suggests that producing sustainable acrylonitrile (and other bio-based chemicals and intermediates) generates significantly less CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;than the crude oil alternative. However, their industrialisation is in its infancy. Scaling up to the extent where corresponding CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;reductions move the dial will require regulatory commitment and massive capital investment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, the PioneerLab nose panel remains a proof of concept. The challenge for Airbus and other manufacturers is to work with&nbsp; supply chains to make bio-fibre production economically viable, and to ensure it can be ramped up cost effectively to meet accelerating aircraft production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally it\u2019s worth remembering that bio-materials are just one of many pathways to enabling&nbsp; low-carbon mobility. One thing is sure: the less a vehicle weighs, the less it emits. Composites\u2019 proven performance means they will play an important weight-saving role for many more years to come.
