Now, the proportion stands at almost 48%. This leaves the companies significantly off-track to the 100% mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On recycled and bio-based content, the average share has increased by just 2.4% to 9.4% during the Pact\u2019s first five years.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/packagingeurope.com\/news\/colgate-palmolive-doubts-recyclability-reusability-or-compostability-for-flexibles-by-2025\/11315.article\">Colgate-Palmolive, a Pact member, recently stated<\/a>&nbsp;that many consumer goods brands have faced challenges sourcing recycled plastic content due to availability issues that can only be solved with stronger extended producer responsibility legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roadmap 2.0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/usplasticspact.org\/\">An update to the Pact\u2019s roadmap<\/a>&nbsp;confirms that \u201ctargets, outcomes and deliverables not yet fully achieved\u201d will be carried forward to 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It adds: \u201cOur trajectory is positive, but an ever-changing landscape necessitates an agile and adaptive strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To that end, the updated targets are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eliminate 100% of the items on the problematic and unnecessary materials list<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduce the absolute use of virgin plastic by 30%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Design and manufacture 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or composable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Effectively recycle 50% of plastic packaging and establish the necessary framework to recycle \/ compost packaging at scale<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Members should achieve an average of 30% recycled plastic content or responsibly sourced bio-based content across all plastic packaging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify viable reusable packaging systems and increase their implementation and scale<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The only new targets are those relating to refill, and to the absolute reduction in the use of virgin plastics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On reuse, companies participating in the Pact will be expected to establish \u201cclear targets\u201d to scale reusable options by 2026 and to demonstrate progress thereafter. The Pact will work with firms across the plastics value chain to identify the kinds of products for which refill, return and other reuse models are likely succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edie.net\/brands-and-retailers-not-on-track-for-key-2025-sustainability-goals-on-plastics\/\">The Ellen MacArthur Foundation estimates<\/a>&nbsp;that reusable plastic packaging accounts for around 2% of the global consumer goods market, with this proportion having stagnated. The practice setting of quantitative reusability targets by brands remains rare but is gathering pace with pioneers including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edie.net\/pepsico-to-package-20-of-drinks-in-reusable-bottles-by-2030\/\">PepsiCo<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edie.net\/this-could-be-a-transformative-moment-coca-cola-to-increase-use-of-reusable-bottles\/\">The Coca-Cola Company.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US Plastics Pact is one of 12 similar pacts globally, convened through a network jointly overseen by The Ellen MacArthur Foundation and WRAP.
