The company claims that the product called IUCT-S50 is the world’s first second-generation biodiesel. Industrial production of the new fuel could begin within nine months; reportedly, negotiations with the world’s largest petrochemicals companies are currently under way with a view to licencing the product for sale in Europe and the US.

According to IUCT general manager Josep Castells, the main advantage of IUCT-S50 is that it is made from the waste of biodiesel plants. While at one time glycerine was relatively scarce, the proliferation of biodiesel plants has increased glycerine production, making it a viable input.

Further information
IUCT Press release The first spanish second generation of biocarburants

(Cf. news of 2007-02-07, 2006-12-18 and 2006-09-21.)

The spanish biotech institute IUCT (Science and Technology for Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industries) has developed a biofuel produced from glycerine.
