The Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF, Darmstadt/Germany, has developed its own manufacturing process for the compounds. It is a natural fiber-reinforced compound with special properties in terms of hydrophobicity and temperature stability, so that it cannot only be processed in the SEAM process (Screw Extrusion Additive Manufacturing), but the components are also suitable for outdoor use.

Novel natural fiber-reinforced compounds for processing in High-Speed Additive Manufacturing © Fraunhofer LBF

The “ECO2-LInE” project, which is supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, Berlin/Germany, focuses on saving weight with innovative natural fiber-reinforced lightweight components. At the same time, the production process is being optimized regarding the ecological balance and improved recyclability is being achieved after at least the equivalent service life of the original component. This makes an important contribution to climate protection. The focus here is on seat structures for electromobility, tractor crossovers and pick-up attachments. Stowage elements, which are parts of a pick-up attachment, are produced in printed form. This new 3D printing process is 8 times faster than conventional 3D printers.
The innovative process uses an epoxy resin coating to modify the wood fibers, which give the plastic components their special temperature resistance and hydrophobicity. This modification allows the fibers to be integrated into polyamides, which was previously not possible.

In an exemplary application in high-speed trains, 160 kg could be saved per sustainable transition system over a mileage of 12.5 million km. This corresponds to a total saving of almost 115 t CO2e for the entire train.

The “ECO2-LInE” project will be presented at the Fraunhofer joint stand at the Hannover Messe from April 22-26, 2024 in Hanover/Germany.

As part of the “ECO2-LInE” research project, heavy metal constructions of land vehicles are to be replaced by lightweight, natural fiber-reinforced compounds.
