The application of adapted current certification schemes for bio-based value chains is emphasised as a central solution.

The policy brief sheds light on the valorisation, certification, sustainability, and tracking and traceability of organic residues. Aligned with the Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC, the EU taxonomy, the EU corporate due diligence regulation and other pertinent regulations, BioReCer’s recommendations urge policymakers to prioritise the utilisation of sustainable organic residues to reduce reliance on fossil feedstocks and mitigate associated greenhouse gas emissions. The six recommendations formulated by BioReCer aim to catalyse policy reforms and industry initiatives to unlock the full potential of organic residues as valuable feedstock for bio-based products:

Treat Organic Residues as Resources

Foster Use of Organic Residues

Mandatory Collection of Organic Waste

Recognise Adapted Certification Schemes

Implement Mass Balance and Free Attribution

Promote Consumer Awareness

The policy brief highlights the significant volumes of organic residues currently underutilised across various sectors (i.e. forestry, fisheries, agriculture and municipalities), emphasising the need for concerted efforts to integrate these (waste) resources into bio-based value chains. By leveraging organic residues, the EU can enhance resource efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and stimulate economic growth.

For more information and to access the policy brief, visit here.

To support the project as a stakeholder, visit https://biorecer.eu and become a member of the BioReCer Stakeholders Platform (BRSP).

About BioReCer

BioReCer is a Horizon Europe project dedicated to assessing and enhancing certification schemes for biological resources, driving the transition towards a sustainable circular bioeconomy.
