The initiative of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biopreferred.gov\/BioPreferred\/faces\/pages\/articles\/NBPD2.xhtml\" target=\"_blank\">BioPreferred\u00ae Program<\/a>\u00a0highlights the importance of\u00a0biotech and biobased products and their role\u00a0in the American economy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Embracing biobased products provides many benefits to both the environment and the economy, as they are cost-comparative while increasing renewable resource use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Switching to biobased products can help reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, compostable biobased items help boost&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bio.news\/agriculture\/world-soil-day-recognizes-where-food-begins\/\">soil health<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bio.news\/climate-change\/its-world-water-day-and-biotech-can-join-in-the-efforts-for-cleaner-water\/\">water quality<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pbpc.com\/bioproducts-benefit-environment-economy-nasda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Plant Based Products Council<\/a>&nbsp;wrote in a report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you look at the many ways in which biotech companies are rising to the challenge of reducing and mitigating climate impacts, such as developing crop traits and plant-based materials to replace fossil resources, there is no question that biotech is \u2018climate tech,\u2019\u201d says Beth Ellikidis, VP for Agriculture and Environment at the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The USDA said NBPD aims to \u201cbring attention to the great work being done to improve sustainability, reduce our reliance on petroleum-based products, and benefit rural communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paving the way to a sustainable future<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The USDA introduced the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/media\/press-releases\/2016\/02\/18\/fact-sheet-overview-usdas-biopreferred-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BioPreferred Program<\/a>&nbsp;under the 2002 Farm Bill. The program was expanded in the 2014 Farm Bill. Since Dec. 2015, more than 2,500 products in 100 different product categories have been certified \u201cbiobased.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help boost&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bio.news\/biomanufacturing\/usda-will-invest-10-million-in-biobased-production\/\">biobased manufacturing<\/a>&nbsp;and enhance the use of renewable resources, in 2022, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the USDA plans for a $10 million investment in agriculture. This investment was part of a $1.2 trillion&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/bipartisan-infrastructure-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act<\/a>, the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nifa.usda.gov\/grants\/programs\/bioproduct-pilot-program?mkt_tok=NDkwLUVIWi05OTkAAAGFTsqg4pYQSB9bOH210XZpP7Hy9JLYv_OPvk5KewVMK-iELGDtfIQR89lPd5az7K8X7HkxRf5Ta67vVL0VtESqpDsLi96zhqHnkuSf8_mxnwBy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bioproduct Pilot Program<\/a>, aiming to lower carbon biomanufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis program will help farmers take field residues and waste products and turn them into value-added products that create wealth and drive economic development in rural areas,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/media\/press-releases\/2022\/06\/28\/vilsack-announces-bioproduct-pilot-program-funded-bipartisan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said Secretary Vilsack, who announced the program at a farm in Iowa<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biotech and biomanufacturing are growing in popularity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bio.news\/climate-change\/poll-americans-want-more-government-support-for-biotech-as-climate-tech\/\">recent poll<\/a>&nbsp;conducted by Morning Consult for BIO revealed that a large chunk of Americans have a positive outlook when it comes to biotech being a solution to the climate crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bio.news\/climate-change\/poll-americans-want-more-government-support-for-biotech-as-climate-tech\/\">Bio.News<\/a>&nbsp;previously reported, \u201cThe American public is generally confident that the biotechnology industry will play a positive role in promoting food security (78%) and public health (75%) in the face of climate change. Federal policymakers should prioritize incentives for biotech companies to devote resources to solving the challenges brought by climate change, according to 66% of the respondents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biotech innovations seem to receive an increased appreciation for how they contribute and provide sustainable solutions to climate challenges\u2014from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bio.news\/agriculture\/gene-edited-crops-and-waste-prevention-week\/\">bioengineered crops<\/a>&nbsp;designed to endure&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bio.news\/agriculture\/gene-edited-wheat-genetically-modified-biotech-agriculture-climate-change-2\/\">harsh weather conditions<\/a>&nbsp;and superpests to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bio.news\/federal-policy\/biofuels-can-help-battle-surging-gas-prices-and-emissions-bio-tells-biden\/\">biofuels<\/a>&nbsp;that slash carbon emissions in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How fashion is utilizing biomanufacturing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As one of the main polluters, the fashion industry has been the target of criticism for a while now. But some industry leaders are making more sustainable choices and incorporating biobased products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bio.news\/latest-news\/biotech-fashion-sustainability-fashion-week\/\">Biotech fashion<\/a>&nbsp;is on the rise, with textiles developed from alternative natural sources like algae or fungi.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bio.news\/latest-news\/biotech-fashion-sustainability-fashion-week\/\">Bio.News<\/a> also reported that SmartFiber, a company based in Germany, recently designed a seaweed-infused cellulose fiber containing 19% seaweed content referred to as SeaCell fiber that \u201chas limitless applications in textiles\u2026for a broad spectrum of uses in sports and leisure textiles\u2014from underwear and loungewear to soft furnishings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BASF x Inditex is another great example of collaboration toward clean(er) fashion, resulting in a new, breakthrough material that boosts recycling efforts in the textile industry. \u201cFollowing a \u2018design for recycling\u2019 approach, all parts, including fabrics, buttons, filling, hook and loop and zipper are made from loopamid,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/basf_basf-and-inditex-make-a-breakthrough-in-textile-to-textile-activity-7155504489175613441-GbZG?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BASF said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two companies trademarked&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/showcase\/loopamid\/?trk=public_post_reshare-text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">loopamid\u00ae<\/a>, which is a type of polyamide (also known as nylon) and is made entirely from recycled textiles.
