This is particularly crucial given that Europe currently depends on graphite imports for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/single-market-economy.ec.europa.eu\/publications\/study-critical-raw-materials-eu-2023-final-report_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">99% of its supply<\/a>. With the funding, the company will build an industrial pilot reactor capable of processing 100 tons of CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;annually and producing 27 tons of carbon materials, making UP Catalyst the largest provider of green graphite in the world. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The round was led by Berlin-based climate tech VC fund&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/extantia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Extantia<\/a>&nbsp;and supported by Estonia\u2019s state fund&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/smartcap.ee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SmartCap<\/a>, along with the continued participation of existing investors&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sunly.ee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sunly<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.littlegreenfund.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Little Green Fund<\/a>, Scottish Baltic Invest and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ut.ee\/en\/unitartu-ventures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UniTartu Ventures<\/a>. The investment will be instrumental in UP Catalyst\u2019s quest to scale up its production capabilities. The new reactor will have a production capacity ten times larger than the current setup and marks an important milestone before the construction of a full-scale industrial reactor unit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Yair Reem, Partner at\u00a0Extantia<\/strong>, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership by saying, \u201cUP Catalyst is redefining the conventional approach to graphite production by turning away from environmentally detrimental fossil fuel methods. We perceive China\u2019s export restrictions not as a barrier but as a catalyst for European green innovation. UP Catalyst stands at the forefront, ready to deliver a dependable, price-competitive and sustainable solution to address the growing global demand for battery manufacturing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>With the global demand for graphite expected to outstrip supply, creating an estimated\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rechargenews.com\/energy-transition\/could-green-graphite-made-from-wood-chips-loosen-chinas-grip-on-battery-energy-storage-\/2-1-1521028\" target=\"_blank\">700,000-ton annual deficit by 2030<\/a>, UP Catalyst is positioned to become a transformative force in the European battery landscape. By replacing fossil-based graphite with UP Catalyst green graphite, the battery anodes will become CO<sub>2<\/sub>-negative. This shift could contribute to avoiding 118.7 megatons of CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions annually by the year 2030, marking a substantial environmental impact.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Gary Urb, CEO of UP Catalyst<\/strong>, expressed his excitement about the investment: \u201cWe are thrilled to have secured this funding, bringing us one step closer to empowering 4 million car batteries with graphite sourced from CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions by 2030.
