{"id":134324,"date":"2023-11-09T07:29:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-09T06:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/?p=134324"},"modified":"2023-11-06T11:02:00","modified_gmt":"2023-11-06T10:02:00","slug":"our-view-on-the-zero-draft-for-a-global-plastics-treaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/our-view-on-the-zero-draft-for-a-global-plastics-treaty\/","title":{"rendered":"Our view on the &#8220;Zero Draft&#8221; for a Global Plastics Treaty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p><strong>We welcome the \u2018Zero Draft\u2019 for a Global Plastics Treaty (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/43239\/ZERODRAFT.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">UNEP\/PP\/INC.3\/4<\/a>) prepared by the INC Chair, which in our view forms a good basis to continue negotiations at\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/inc-plastic-pollution\/session-3\" target=\"_blank\">INC-3<\/a>\u00a0in Nairobi in November 2023.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Businesses respond to certainty\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u2018Zero Draft\u2019 is a comprehensive document that contains various options for potential treaty provisions that could support progress on all three global outcomes we call for in our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessforplasticstreaty.org\/vision-statement\">Vision Statement<\/a>: Reduction, Circulation, and Prevention alongside Remediation to achieve a circular economy for plastic and to end plastic pollution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We believe that the final treaty must contain strong and legally-binding provisions that require national governments to implement and enforce harmonised regulations over the full life-cycle of plastics. It is encouraging to see all of our policy recommendations are, to some extent, reflected in the structure of the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/bitstream\/handle\/20.500.11822\/43239\/ZERODRAFT.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zero Draft<\/a>\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>UN Member States have the opportunity to further strengthen the draft legal text and create alignment on the most ambitious options.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At INC-3 it is important for governments to develop a common understanding of what each option entails and strengthen binding elements. We stand ready to work with governments and stakeholders in this important next stage of the treaty negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u200d<strong>Explore our view on the \u201cZero Draft\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the two documents below we provide a comprehensive assessment along with a high-level summary for those sections in the \u2018Zero Draft\u2019 that are related to our focus areas.
