The UK-based start-up\u2019s seaweed-based food packaging coating branded Notpla Coating has been officially recognized as plastic-free by the Dutch government, which Notpla says is applying the strictest interpretation of the \u201cnon-plastic\u201d definition under the EU\u2019s Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/10\/6383183460807116002.10._Notpla_main_800.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-133138\" style=\"width:271px;height:271px\" width=\"271\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/10\/6383183460807116002.10._Notpla_main_800.jpg 800w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/10\/6383183460807116002.10._Notpla_main_800-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/10\/6383183460807116002.10._Notpla_main_800-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/10\/6383183460807116002.10._Notpla_main_800-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/10\/6383183460807116002.10._Notpla_main_800-270x270.jpg 270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 271px) 100vw, 271px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Made from seaweed and plant extracts, Notpla provides an internal coating for food takeaway boxes to retain moisture and grease in food and maintain the packaging\u2019s robustness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Niall Russell, head of Marketing at Notpla, tells&nbsp;<strong><em>Packaging Insights<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;that a \u201chuge\u201d loophole in the EU\u2019s SUPD allows plastic companies to proclaim to be \u201cplastic-free\u201d in how they communicate with the market and sell their products.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis loophole stems from the ambiguous definition of \u2018main structural\u2019 component in the plastic definition. The law requested EU member states to prohibit certain single-use plastic items and put in place marking requirements through their national legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a thorough independent assessment by global sustainability consultancy Eunomia Research &amp; Consulting, Notpla Coating was confirmed to be fully compliant with the EU\u2019s SUPD and therefore is not plastic. Eunomia has concluded that the polymer utilized by Notpla within their packaging products may be defined as a natural polymer that is not chemically modified and is therefore not considered to be \u201cplastic\u201d as defined by the EU SUPD, finds the Eunomia report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFurther positive assessment was received from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.packaginginsights.com\/news\/netherlands-to-impose-levies-on-takeaway-plastic-packaging-next-month.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dutch government<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 the nation which is currently taking the strictest stance on enforcing the SUPD of any EU member state by imposing a tax on disposable cups and containers that contain plastic,\u201d asserts Russell.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pierre-Paslier Notpla\u2019s co-founder says the classification \u201csets Notpla apart and aligns with our mission to reduce society\u2019s dependence on plastic.
