{"id":130184,"date":"2023-08-10T07:13:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-10T05:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/?p=130184"},"modified":"2023-08-07T09:08:16","modified_gmt":"2023-08-07T07:08:16","slug":"berlin-hopeful-brussels-will-greenlight-large-scale-hydrogen-subsidies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/berlin-hopeful-brussels-will-greenlight-large-scale-hydrogen-subsidies\/","title":{"rendered":"Berlin hopeful Brussels will greenlight large-scale hydrogen subsidies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p>In a bid to decarbonise its power sector and ensure the provision of climate-friendly energy even during lulls in wind and solar power production, the German government is looking to significantly ramp up the country\u2019s fleet of hydrogen power plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/08\/image-11.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-130192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/08\/image-11.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/08\/image-11-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/08\/image-11-150x84.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/08\/image-11-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/08\/image-11-400x225.jpeg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>According to Habeck, the ministry\u2019s talks with the European Commission over the past months have \u201cachieved important progress on the framework for future hydrogen power plants.\u201d [EPA-EFE\/Clemens Bilan]<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But the significant tenders required to reach this goal represent national state aid, which needs to be greenlighted by the EU due to its potential to distort the common market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA climate-neutral power sector is the backbone of decarbonisation of the other sectors, because all other sectors will use more electricity in the future than they do today,\u201d Habeck said in a statement on Tuesday (1 August).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While \u201crenewables, flexibility in the system and storage\u201d are important pillars of this effort, according to the Green minister, controllable power will also play a key role \u201cin some hours of the year\u201d \u2013 namely, in times with little wind and sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe conversion and decarbonisation of the fossil-fuel-based power plant fleet is, therefore, the next important step,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Habeck, the ministry\u2019s talks with the European Commission over the past months have \u201cachieved important progress on the framework for future hydrogen power plants\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the ministry stressed, this \u201cfirst important step\u201d does not yet mean that the measures it envisages have been formally approved under state aid rules, but only \u201csets out the guard rails\u201d for how far Berlin can go in terms of tendering new power plant capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, the government aims to tender 8.8 GW of new power plants that should run on hydrogen from the start, in addition to 15 GW of plants that can temporarily run on natural gas and should be connected to the hydrogen grid by 2035 at the latest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a next step, the ministry will now launch a \u201cconsultation phase,\u201d set to start at the end of summer, during which state aid proceedings with the European Commission will be continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The push for state aid also comes in the context of Germany\u2019s revamped hydrogen strategy&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/energy-environment\/news\/germanys-updated-hydrogen-strategy-new-commitment-to-fossil-based-hydrogen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">presented last Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the strategy places heavy emphasis on imports from Denmark and Norway, it also aims to ramp up domestic production of climate-friendly hydrogen through electrolysis and sets the goal of 10 GW of electrolyser capacity by 2030 \u2013 double the 2020 target.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a bid to decarbonise its power sector and ensure the provision of climate-friendly energy even during lulls in wind and solar power production, the German government is looking to significantly ramp up the country\u2019s fleet of hydrogen power plants.
