{"id":124657,"date":"2023-03-30T07:20:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-30T05:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/?p=124657"},"modified":"2023-03-27T14:36:47","modified_gmt":"2023-03-27T12:36:47","slug":"poll-shows-eco-conscious-consumers-prefer-compostables-to-recycled-plastic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/poll-shows-eco-conscious-consumers-prefer-compostables-to-recycled-plastic\/","title":{"rendered":"Poll shows eco-conscious consumers prefer compostables to recycled plastic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Commissioned by compostable packaging firm TIPA, and undertaken by Insight, the research among UK consumers analyses concern about traditional plastic packaging, awareness of the alternatives, and preferences among those with most knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"550\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/03\/Compost-5186-TIPA.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-124691\" srcset=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/03\/Compost-5186-TIPA.jpeg 550w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/03\/Compost-5186-TIPA-300x180.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/03\/Compost-5186-TIPA-150x90.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/03\/Compost-5186-TIPA-400x240.jpeg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>An estimated 2.5 million tonnes of plastic packaging is used every year in the UK, and TIPA insists less than 10% is recycled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research identifies 58% of eco-conscious consumers who say finding alternatives to traditional plastic packaging is \u2018important\u2019.<br>Respondents who prefer compostable packaging are significantly more willing to pay a premium for alternative food packaging (73%), compared with those who favour recycled plastics (53%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than three quarters (78%) of respondents say it is now important for firms to provide an alternative to plastic packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, consumers purchasing fresh produce are most likely to seek out alternatives to plastic packaging, with 32% saying they do so \u2018all the time\u2019 while only 16% of those buying goods on the internet will do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daphna Nissenbaum, chief executive, TIPA, said the more consumers know about compostable packaging, the more likely they are to prefer it to recycled materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe most eco-conscious consumers understand that plastics can only ever be \u2018downcycled\u2019 and that flexible plastic packaging in particular are very difficult to recycle. These consumers are prepared to pay a small premium for compostables instead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe UK government should prepare for an increase in the use of compostable materials and ensure they can be collected by local authorities alongside food waste.
