Single-use plastics have come to epitomise our take-make-waste\u00a0linear economy, and as global awareness has grown, \u2018no excuse for single-use\u2019 has become a common refrain. From straws and plastic bags to disposable coffee cups and takeaway cartons, retailers and their customers have been looking for ways to reduce consumption of disposable plastics.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A shift to compostable packaging \u2013 products made from biodegradable materials that can, if handled properly, be returned to the earth after use \u2013 appears to be an intuitive solution, particularly for the food industry. And a popular one. Vegware, a UK-based supplier of plant-based, compostable packaging, saw its<a href=\"https:\/\/news.vegware.com\/2019\/04\/08\/todays-guardian-news-53-growth-in-one-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;sales increase by 53% in 2019<\/a>&nbsp;and a further&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.retailtimes.co.uk\/compostable-packaging-manufacturer-vegware-reports-68-international-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">43% in 2020<\/a>. In Canada, fast food chain&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.packaging-gateway.com\/news\/kfc-canada-packaging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KFC has committed to make all its consumer-facing packaging home compostable by 2025<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These trends are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2103183118\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">echoed in Europe, North America, and Asia<\/a>&nbsp;and look set to continue.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futuremarketinsights.com\/reports\/compostable-foodservice-packaging-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research by Future Market Insights<\/a>&nbsp;suggests that global sales of compostable foodservice packaging will reach USD 19.9 billion in 2022 and USD 28.8 billion by 2029, with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.databridgemarketresearch.com\/reports\/global-compostable-packaging-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Asia-Pacific region the fastest growth area<\/a>&nbsp;thanks to government policies to stem the tide of plastic pollution.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, compostable packaging is not a cure-all.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bioplastics.guide\/ref\/bioplastics\/standards-and-certifications\/\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2079-6439\/7\/4\/32\/htm\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666498420300570\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.futurity.org\/biodegradable-plastic-from-yeast-and-oil\/\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbcearth.com\/news\/turning-carbon-emissions-into-plastic\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"634\" height=\"555\" src=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/03\/Bildschirmfoto-2023-03-08-um-13.22.51.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-123839\" srcset=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/03\/Bildschirmfoto-2023-03-08-um-13.22.51.png 634w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/03\/Bildschirmfoto-2023-03-08-um-13.22.51-300x263.png 300w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/03\/Bildschirmfoto-2023-03-08-um-13.22.51-150x131.png 150w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/03\/Bildschirmfoto-2023-03-08-um-13.22.51-308x270.png 308w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Compostable packaging: a good idea in principle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First and foremost, single-use products, regardless of the material used, tend to consume more energy and produce more emissions than recycled or reused alternatives. Although data is patchy, some life cycle assessments (LCAs) found\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2020\/1\/15\/21065446\/compostable-take-out-containers\" target=\"_blank\">compostable materials can have higher environmental impacts<\/a>\u00a0than non-compostable alternatives. While<a href=\"https:\/\/ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/life-cycle-assessment-for-the-circular-economy\">\u00a0LCAs don\u2019t take into account the long-term impacts of a system<\/a>\u00a0that only uses non-compostable packaging nor the potential for more efficient energy use as compostables reach scale, they do highlight the challenges in simply swapping conventional packaging for compostable alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there are the problems of collection, sorting, and processing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specialist industrial composting facilities are not currently widespread. For example, although the UK has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/69400\/anaerobic-digestion-strat-action-plan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">invested heavily in anaerobic digestion facilities<\/a>&nbsp;to process food waste,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/cm201719\/cmselect\/cmenvfru\/2080\/208007.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">industrial composting infrastructure is not yet sufficient to process compostable packaging<\/a>&nbsp;at scale. In the US, there are fewer than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biocycle.net\/food-waste-composting-infrastructure-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">100 plants capable of processing certified packaging<\/a>. Transporting materials to the right plant increases their carbon footprint.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poor waste sorting systems mean that compostables often well-meaningly find their way into the wrong streams, contaminating full batches of recycling and condemning them to landfill. That\u2019s if products are effectively collected and sorted in the first place. The vast majority are not. In the UK, only\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/cm201719\/cmselect\/cmenvaud\/657\/65705.htm\" target=\"_blank\">1 in 400 takeaway coffee cups<\/a>, compostable or otherwise, currently make it an appropriate processing facility. The rest are binned or leaked into the environment. Photo by Clair on Unsplash.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prevention is better than cure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a\u00a0circular economy, the more intact a material can stay while being circulated the better, as it preserves not only the material, but also the embedded labour and energy. As a rule of thumb, retaining the shape of the packaging (e.g. through\u00a0reuse) is more desirable than grinding up the packaging (e.g. through mechanical recycling) which, in turn, is more desirable than breaking the packaging down into basic chemical components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Composting is the biological equivalent of recycling. In the face of our current environmental challenges, recycling won\u2019t be enough to overcome the sheer amount of waste we produce. \u201cI<a href=\"https:\/\/ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/articles\/recycling-and-the-circular-economy-whats-the-difference\">n a properly built circular economy, one should rather focus on avoiding the recycling stage at all costs,\u201d states the World Economic Forum. \u201cIt may sound straightforward, but preventing waste from being created in the first place is the only realistic strategy<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greenpeace USA cautioned against solutions which simply substitute single-use items for other disposables in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/research\/how-companies-still-have-it-wrong-on-plastic-pollution-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a report published in 2019<\/a>: \u201cThere is no way the planet can sustain additional demand from companies attempting to substitute their single-use plastic packaging; companies must commit to overall reduction of packaging and shift to alternative delivery systems like reuse and refill.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A circular economy instead prioritises upstream solutions that address problems right at the source by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/topics\/circular-economy-introduction\/overview\">eliminating unnecessary packaging and circulating&nbsp;<\/a>the packaging that is needed. For example&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bostonteaparty.co.uk\/blog\/post.php?s=2018-05-31-no-excuse-for-single-use\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deposit-return systems for reusable coffee cups<\/a>&nbsp;eliminate the need for disposables altogether, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icagruppen.se\/en\/archive\/press-archive\/2017\/following-successful-pilot-sustainable-laser-marking-of-organic-melon-and-butternut-squash\/#!\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">laser-marking the skin of some fruit and vegetables<\/a>removes the need for plastic wraps and stickers. Reuse is another upstream solution.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cafewilliamspartivento.com\/en\/our-jute-bags-are-reused-thanks-to-circular-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jute bag<\/a>s, for example, can be reused a number of times and are ultimately compostable at the end of their useful lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When composting is an effective solution<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are instances where well thought through, compostable solutions are the best fit for a circular economy \u2013 particularly where they return nutrients to the soil and contribute to regenerating soils and building a healthy food system. Switching to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostock.nz\/hawkes-bay-apple-grower-first-in-southern-hemisphere-to-use-compostable-apple-sticker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">compostable fruit stickers<\/a>&nbsp;or using&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.notpla.com\/products-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seaweed sachets for sauce servings<\/a>, for example, can prevent contamination of organic materials and ensure more of them can be safely returned to the soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Closed loop systems are ideal applications. Take a festival or sports event: using compostable packaging means uneaten food and scraps can be thrown in a single bin for processing, preserving food nutrients without contaminating the waste stream. Similarly, collection services where companies both supply and collect compostable packaging reduces contamination and leakage, and ensures that materials are circulated at their highest value.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VKQ8ccZ_HJY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Biopak\u2019s Compost Club<\/a>&nbsp;supplies and later collects used packaging from businesses for its own compost service, and has diverted more than 1,500 tonnes of compostable packaging and food scraps from landfill in Australia and New Zealand since launching in 2017. In Milan, municipal authorities have tripled the collection of separated food waste by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.packagingnews.co.uk\/news\/milan-showcases-waste-separation-system-using-bio-degradable-bags-10-06-2014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;providing vented bins and compostable bags<\/a>&nbsp;to residents, enabling the production of good quality compost for farmers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, compostables could be an appropriate substitute for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/flexible-packaging\/learn\">up to 20% of plastic flexibles<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 the fastest growing plastic-packaging category \u2013 while t<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.powersystemsuk.co.uk\/news\/uk-stop-plans-ramp-use-industrially-compostable-packaging\/\" target=\"_blank\">he Bio-Based and Biodegradable Industries Association (BBIA) estimates that compostable materials could substitute around 5-8% of current plastic packaging<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2023\/03\/41689-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Bins, including compostable waste bin. Photo by Javier Huedo on Unsplash.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building compostable packaging into the circular economy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Compostable packaging is one of multiple solutions needed to prevent waste, circulate materials, and regenerate nature. It is best suited to certain scenarios, notably food and drink applications where it can help increase the proportion of organic waste collected, treated and recycled, which at the moment stands at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/flexible-packaging\/learn\">only 13%<\/a>. To increase this rate, industrial facilities need to be scaled globally over the coming years to capture and circulate organic materials, some of which will be collected alongside compostable food packaging.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this to be effective, we need global investment in collection and processing infrastructure to ensure both the logistics and economics work.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ee.ricardo.com\/news\/can-the-uk-learn-from-italy%E2%80%99s-new-compostable-packaging-epr-scheme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Italy\u2019s compostable packaging EPR scheme<\/a>&nbsp;is an example of a mechanism for raising funds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Concurrently, businesses and policymakers need to develop and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/substitution-to-compostable-flexibles-design-and-circulation\">roll out labelling systems and collection streams<\/a>&nbsp;that effectively separate and sort compostable materials.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/packagingeurope.com\/sorting-of-compostable-packaging-becoming-realistic-through-watermarking\/8022.article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Technological advances<\/a>&nbsp;such as digital watermarks are making this increasingly feasible and affordable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But before turning to compostable solutions, even if the right treatment facilities are available, businesses should ask themselves first and foremost if&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/plastics.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/upstream\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">elimination or reuse would be better solutions<\/a>.
