One trend clearly is textile recycling and the separation of cellulose fibres from textiles in order to use them again as a resource for new fibres. Other trends focus on the development of new production technologies and chemicals for the production of cellulose fibres from wood.

Ideally, sustainability benefits also result in economic benefits. Consequently, companies are increasingly interested in analysing their processes to identify hotspots and determine their carbon footprint. However, assessing the sustainability of production technologies and resources is a challenging path. In order to calculate emissions and compare products or technologies, companies along the value chain must go hand in hand and provide production-specific data for sustainability assessment.

The analysis and calculation of sustainability raises many questions in the industry: How can we gather enough data to measure environmental impacts? How can sustainability assessments be carried out in specific cases? What about the environmental, economic and social sustainability of new technologies and process chemicals? Are new sustainability regulations for chemicals to be taken into consideration? Which processes are the most environmentally friendly? Is generalisation even possible or do assessments require site-specific approaches? How do we assess biodegradable products? Can they support the transition to a more sustainable fibre industry?

These and other urgent questions represent the guiding topics of the session “Sustainability and Environmental Impacts”. This session will provide a comprehensive overview of the spectrum of sustainability and environmental impact assessments for cellulose fibres and introduces bio-degradable concepts for substituting plastics.

Sustainability and other important topics represent the Similar growth rates are expected in the following years. This makes cellulosic fibres the fastest growing fibre group in the textile industry and therefore the largest investment sector in the global circular bio-economy.

However, the recycling of the cellulose has some hurdles. How can technology overcome these obstacles? How can markets achieve a circularity of the material? How can the cellulose fibres industry contribute to the sustainability and circularity of the textile sector? These and other questions represent the lead topics of the upcoming Cellulose Fibres Conference 2023 taking place on 8-9 March 2023 in Cologne, Germany and online.

++ Almost 130 participants already registered ++ Meet the exhibitors! ++ Final program ++ Due to increasing environmental awareness, innovators are currently developing several new technologies for fibre production, some of which are already in the commercialisation phase.
