In a new position paper VITO examines which CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0reduction strategies exist, which are the ones to focus on and how CCU-based value chains contribute in the battle against climate change.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;emissions originate from burning fossil fuel, industry and land-use and should be rapidly reduced (&gt;350 Mton CO<sub>2<\/sub>\/year), while \u2018negative\u2019 CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;emissions are gradually introduced in addition to existing CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;reduction strategies, starting from 2030. This last strategy consists of the capture of CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;from the air and its permanent storage under the ground or in materials, for which an \u2018eternal\u2019 lifetime can be assumed. Existing CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;reduction strategies include among others electrification, avoided demand, renewable energy and green hydrogen production.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In the new position paper \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/vito.be\/sites\/vito.be\/files\/vito_ccu_position_paper.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;Capture and Utilization (CCU) matters<\/a>\u2019 VITO experts provide an answer to the following questions:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Which CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;reduction strategy should we focus on?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>And what are the criteria to base such a decision on?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>So what can be the contribution of CCU-based value chains in the fight against climate change?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The search to answers starts from the current and future availabilities of renewable electricity as conditio sine qua non, with deployments spread over time.
