{"id":108070,"date":"2022-04-22T07:29:00","date_gmt":"2022-04-22T05:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/?p=108070"},"modified":"2022-04-19T14:43:46","modified_gmt":"2022-04-19T12:43:46","slug":"international-team-nets-e3-4m-to-advance-ship-based-carbon-capture-for-maritime-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/international-team-nets-e3-4m-to-advance-ship-based-carbon-capture-for-maritime-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"International team nets \u20ac3.4M to advance ship-based carbon capture for maritime sector"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"760\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2022\/04\/Sleipnir-Haugesund.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-108098\" srcset=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2022\/04\/Sleipnir-Haugesund.jpg 760w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2022\/04\/Sleipnir-Haugesund-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2022\/04\/Sleipnir-Haugesund-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2022\/04\/Sleipnir-Haugesund-400x266.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A cross-boundary project involving science and industry experts has landed \u20ac3.4 million (total budget \u20ac4.9M) from an EU climate action fund to accelerate the uptake of ship-based carbon capture (SBCC) by international shipping companies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/everlongccus.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> EverLoNG project<\/a> led by TNO will demonstrate SBCC on board two LNG-fuelled ships, owned and operated by project partners TotalEnergies and Heerema Marine Contractors, with results aimed at moving the technology closer to market readiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as the SBCC trials, the 16 project partners from five countries \u2013 Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, the UK, and the USA \u2013 will conduct studies to support the development of full-chain carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) networks, connecting SBCC with CO<sub>2<\/sub> transport links, geological CO<sub>2<\/sub> storage and markets for CO<sub>2<\/sub> use. These studies will identify and help solve any technical barriers to the implementation of SBCC as well as lower the costs associated with the technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project consortium includes ship classification societies \u2013 Lloyd\u2019s Register, Bureau Veritas and DNV \u2013 who will evaluate how SBCC fits within existing regulatory frameworks for shipping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Combined activities by EverLoNG partners will support the ambitious target of advancing SBCC as a cost-competitive decarbonization option on the market by 2025, with a marginal abatement cost \u2013 the cost of reducing environmental impact \u2013 of between \u20ac75 and \u20ac100 per tonne of CO<sub>2<\/sub> equivalent and a CO<sub>2<\/sub> capture rate of up to 90%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EverLoNG has today launched a dedicated website \u2013 everlongccus.eu \u2013 with information about all aspects of the project and links to its social media channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>EverLoNG project coordinator, <strong>Marco Linders<\/strong> of TNO, said: \u201cFunding from the ACT3 program will enable us to conduct studies aimed at making commercial ship-based carbon capture a reality. Our demonstration campaigns will optimize SBCC technology and we will also consider how best to integrate it into existing ship and port infrastructure. We\u2019ll also carry out detailed life cycle assessments and techno-economic analysis, which will be essential information for maritime sector companies. International collaboration is a big part of EverLoNG and our consortium is fully committed to supporting the shipping industry\u2019s decarbonization goals.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Heerema\u2019s Sustainability Project Manager, <strong>Cees Dijkhuizen<\/strong>, said: \u201cAt Heerema, we believe that a responsible company is a sustainable company. This belief is why we became carbon neutral in 2020 and have committed to reducing our footprint by up to 80% by the end of 2026. Taking part in the EverLoNG Project and testing the use of a carbon capture and storage system onboard our vessel Sleipnir is an important step towards reaching our goals.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Philip Llewellyn<\/strong>, Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage Program Manager, TotalEnergies, said: \u201cTotalEnergies is pleased to be part of the EverLoNG project, which aims to demonstrate the feasibility of CO<sub>2<\/sub> capture onboard ships. As part of our climate ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, together with society, the decarbonization of our maritime activity is an important challenge. Ship-based carbon capture is a promising short-term solution as it could be installed on the current fleet of ships. In addition, the potential application of such a technology onboard future CO<sub>2<\/sub> carriers, as in the Northern Lights project, in which TotalEnergies is a partner, could bring high-potential synergies.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Following a rigorous two-stage evaluation process, EverLoNG was selected along with 12 other R&amp;D projects by the ACT3 funders in 2021 in order to address key research and innovation targets in the CCUS field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The maritime sector aims to reduce CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions from international shipping by at least 50% by 2050.
