So what we do here is just extend the life cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Global demand for coffee is expected to double by 2050, but coffee cultivation is becoming more and more challenging, due to rising temperatures affecting plantations around the world. Therefore, it\u2019s important to find ways to recycle, renew and reuse its byproducts. This could reduce the build up of methane gases and coffee\u2019s contribution to climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pair of Rens\u2019 first-generation \u2018Original\u2019 shoes contain 300 grams of coffee waste, the equivalent to 21 cups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2022\/01\/74360f49f8ddfceba5dad73daaa5c12d_original-750x422-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-103733\" width=\"563\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2022\/01\/74360f49f8ddfceba5dad73daaa5c12d_original-750x422-2.png 750w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2022\/01\/74360f49f8ddfceba5dad73daaa5c12d_original-750x422-2-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2022\/01\/74360f49f8ddfceba5dad73daaa5c12d_original-750x422-2-150x84.png 150w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2022\/01\/74360f49f8ddfceba5dad73daaa5c12d_original-750x422-2-400x225.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter you drink the coffee and throw the coffee grounds away, we actually mix it with recycled plastic pellets made from used water bottles,\u201d explains Tran. \u201cWe then create something called coffee polyester yarn. The majority of the upper part of our shoes is made from this material.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company launched a KickStarter campaign in 2017, raising over \u20ac486,000 in just 24 hours. A follow-up campaign in August 2021 raised an additional \u20ac300,000, and was used to produce Nomad, a second-generation version of the sneaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the market, sustainable products are really popular. What we see as a problem is that those products are not made for young people,\u201d says co-founder and CTO Son Chu. \u201cThe way that they are selling the products is like: \u2018Hey, use us or else the planet is going to die.\u2019 We don\u2019t like that approach.
