The text aims to minimise European consumption of products linked to legal and illegal deforestation by making imports conditional on the absence of deforestation throughout the supply chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis proposal has the potential to be a game-changer and a turning point in the international fight against deforestation,\u201d stressed EU Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevi\u010dius at the meeting of agriculture ministers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Commissioner, there is an \u201curgent need to act\u201d as agricultural land expansion is linked to 90% of the world\u2019s deforestation, and according to a UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) report, the world has lost more forest area than the EU over the past three decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the EU, which \u201cis partly responsible for the problem\u201d as a major consumer of materials and commodities produced on such land, is \u201cleading the way in addressing this problem\u201d by adopting a strict regulatory framework for the main products linked to deforestation like soy, beef, palm oil, timber, cocoa and coffee, the Commissioner added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo make substantial progress\u201d on this issue, he also assured that the EU executive would \u201cstrongly support the French presidency and delegations\u201d during the first half of 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Denormandie, \u201cthis proposal is a key issue for the preservation of ecosystems, the fight against climate change and the preservation of our sustainable consumption patterns.\u201d France will also defend a \u201chigh\u201d level of ambition for the regulation proposed by the European Commission, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the minister warned about the importance of creating a \u201cclear and applicable mechanism for all stakeholders\u201d and of establishing a \u201ccommon and harmonised\u201d framework for the implementation of the regulation to guarantee its effectiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambiguity in the definition and rules set out in the text had to be avoided if the EU was really to be \u201cup to the challenge,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Defending the EU\u2019s agricultural model&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/energy-environment\/news\/france-to-link-climate-and-economic-goals-during-eu-presidency-stint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Linking climate and economic goals<\/a>&nbsp;will be one of France\u2019s priorities when it takes over the EU Council presidency, President Emmanuel Macron said in his 9 December speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was necessary to \u201cre-synchronise our economic agenda with the preservation of biodiversity,\u201d&nbsp; he said while calling for a \u201cpush\u201d for greater reciprocity in international trade regarding environmental standards and ending imported deforestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Macron said it is necessary to \u201cdefend, at the European level, our high-quality agricultural model.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are two of the country\u2019s main priorities regarding agri-food policy, as was reiterated by Agriculture Minister Julien Denormandie at a press conference on 10 December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Denormandie said France would commit to imposing so-called \u2018mirror clauses\u2019 on antibiotics used in livestock farming and for EU countries to harmonise the maximum residue limits of pesticides authorised for imported products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim is to create a \u201clevel playing field with regard to what enters the European market,\u201d the minister added.
