{"id":102275,"date":"2021-12-17T07:13:00","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T06:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/?p=102275"},"modified":"2021-12-17T12:04:20","modified_gmt":"2021-12-17T11:04:20","slug":"eu-carbon-price-could-hit-e100-by-year-end-after-record-run-analysts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/eu-carbon-price-could-hit-e100-by-year-end-after-record-run-analysts\/","title":{"rendered":"EU carbon price could hit \u20ac100 by year end after record run \u2013 analysts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p>Europe\u2019s benchmark carbon price is on track to hit \u20ac100 a tonne by the end of the year, analysts said, after it reached a new record high of \u20ac89.37 a tonne on Wednesday (8 December), marking a near 50% rise since the start of November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2021\/12\/image-13.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-102277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2021\/12\/image-13.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2021\/12\/image-13-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2021\/12\/image-13-150x84.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2021\/12\/image-13-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2021\/12\/image-13-400x225.jpeg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/da\/g\/kamilpetran\" target=\"_blank\">Kamilpetran \/ Shutterstock<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The European Union\u2019s emissions trading system (ETS), which requires manufacturers, power companies and airlines to pay for each tonne of carbon dioxide they emit, is central to its efforts to cut net greenhouse gas emissions by 55% from 1990 levels by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The benchmark December 2021 contract was trading at \u20ac89.24 per tonne by mid-morning on Wednesday, having hit the record high of \u20ac89.37 per tonne earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traders and analysts said a rise to \u20ac100 a tonne is now possible, due to several bullish factors such as higher gas prices, which makes coal power plants more profitable than gas, and an options expiry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Dutch front-month gas contract, also a European benchmark, rose as much as 10% on Wednesday on colder weather forecasts and maintenance at major gas infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rising tensions between Russia and the West over a build-up of troops on the Ukrainian border was also a factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe escalating situation on the European gas market is additionally driving [carbon] prices up now,\u201d said Commerzbank analyst Barbara Lambrecht in a daily report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next Wednesday\u2019s options expiry is also pushing carbon prices up, analysts said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s possible prices could head to \u20ac100 per tonne to get all of the open interest on call options on that strike into the money,\u201d Energy Aspects analyst Trevor Sikorski said in an email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Berenberg analyst Lawson Steel told Reuters via email he expects the carbon contract to reach 110 euros\/tonne by the end of the year.
