{"id":101244,"date":"2021-11-30T07:32:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-30T06:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/?p=101244"},"modified":"2021-11-25T14:29:06","modified_gmt":"2021-11-25T13:29:06","slug":"sugar-beet-re-introduction-could-create-hundreds-of-jobs-and-support-scotlands-net-zero-goals-new-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/sugar-beet-re-introduction-could-create-hundreds-of-jobs-and-support-scotlands-net-zero-goals-new-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Sugar beet re-introduction could create hundreds of jobs and support Scotland\u2019s net zero goals, new report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>New vision for a bioeconomy in Scotland set out in IBioIC report by Scottish Enterprise;<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>At least 815 jobs could be created and thousands more supported through the supply chain;<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Dundee or Grangemouth highlighted as potential sites for a bioethanol plant.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2021\/11\/Sugar-beet.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-101253\" width=\"480\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2021\/11\/Sugar-beet.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2021\/11\/Sugar-beet-300x199.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2021\/11\/Sugar-beet-150x100.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2021\/11\/Sugar-beet-400x266.jpeg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Growing sugar beet in Scotland and processing the crop at a purpose-built biorefinery facility initially producing bioethanol could support thousands of jobs and make a significant contribution to the country\u2019s net zero ambitions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evaluationsonline.org.uk\/evaluations\/Search.do?action=show&amp;id=732&amp;ui=basic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to a study<\/a> funded by Scottish Enterprise and produced by the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.evaluationsonline.org.uk\/evaluations\/Search.do?action=show&amp;id=732&amp;ui=basic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The report<\/a> found that at least 815 jobs could be directly created by moving towards domestically produced bioethanol as a sustainable feedstock for manufacturing, along with hundreds more through associated supply chain and logistics services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sugar extracted from sugar beet can be used in the production of ethanol as a natural and sustainable substitute for petroleum-based chemicals used in a range of household goods, as well as antibiotics, therapeutic proteins, and for transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such a project would also safeguard many of the 11,000 jobs in Scotland\u2019s chemicals industry, which is increasingly moving towards alternatives to fossil fuels, and create new roles in the burgeoning biotechnology sector \u2013 many of which would likely be in rural and deprived areas[1].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Switching to a local supply of bioethanol, rather than relying on importing it from Europe as Scotland currently does, could significantly reduce the country\u2019s carbon footprint by more than 280,000 tonnes of CO2 \u2013 the equivalent of taking nearly 61,000 cars off the road per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2021\/11\/shutterstock_310575989REFINERYINTERIOR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-101254\" width=\"375\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2021\/11\/shutterstock_310575989REFINERYINTERIOR.jpg 750w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2021\/11\/shutterstock_310575989REFINERYINTERIOR-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2021\/11\/shutterstock_310575989REFINERYINTERIOR-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/renewable-carbon.eu\/news\/media\/2021\/11\/shutterstock_310575989REFINERYINTERIOR-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The study builds on crop trials conducted in 2020 that found Scotland can grow sugar beet at competitive yields. IBioIC\u2019s report sets an initial target of growing 1 million tonnes of sugar beet annually, which could in turn produce 110 million litres of bioethanol per year \u2013 expected to be around 75% of Scotland\u2019s current needs for transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dundee \u2013 for its proximity to suitable agricultural land \u2013 or Grangemouth, because of its access to power generation, water treatment, a major port, and existing presence of chemicals companies have also been identified in the report as the optimal locations for a bioethanol plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Mark Bustard, Chief Executive Officer at IBioIC<\/strong>, said: \u201cThe report underlines the scale and significance of the opportunity for Scotland through the re-introduction of sugar beet and the creation of an associated bioethanol plant. The introduction of the new E10 mandate, meaning 10% of petroleum fuel is blended with bioethanol, effectively doubles our need for sustainably sourced ethanol overnight.<\/p><p>\u201cHowever, it is merely a precursor to much bigger changes ahead and sustainable indigenous sugar supply from biomass is a key component in growing a significant new cluster in Scotland. Many of the largest consumer goods manufacturers in the world have committed to net-zero carbon targets and moving away from products made from petrochemicals is a big part of that drive.<\/p><p>\u201cBio-based production is the future of manufacturing in a net-zero Scotland and sugar beet is at the core of Scotland\u2019s opportunity to develop a sustainable feedstock and compete on the global stage. Not only could it safeguard many of the thousands of jobs in our existing chemicals sector, but it could create hundreds more through new opportunities and manufacturing methods.<\/p><p>\u201cIt is up to us now to take this first step towards a more environmentally friendly and future-proofed manufacturing supply chain, at the heart of a bioeconomy.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Trade Minister Ivan McKee said:<\/strong> \u201cWhen managed carefully, renewable resources offer a potential pathway to transform our manufacturing sector and create new value chains for bio-based (biological) products in the transition to a low carbon economy.<\/p><p>\u201cI welcome this report, which will contribute to the evidence-based decisions we will make in our transition to net zero, while protecting our natural environment and its biodiversity. The publication is especially timely as we look forward to the final refresh of the National Plan for Industrial Biotechnology which will be published next year.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Linda Hanna, Managing Director at Scottish Enterprise, said<\/strong>: \u201cThis report shows that reintroducing sugar beet is a powerful step in helping to achieve Scotland\u2019s economic and net zero ambitions. Hot on the heels of COP26 in Glasgow, publishing this report now is no coincidence and gives a strong message of how to take action on climate change.<\/p><p>\u201cNot only can sugar beet provide a credible, sustainable, low carbon alternative to fossil carbon for manufacturing, it can also accelerate the growth of Scotland\u2019s biotechnology sector.<\/p><p>\u201cThe private sector is critical to achieving this growth by getting behind sugar beet and its potential for a wide range of bio-based products.
